Holiday 2023 Newsletter
Greetings! As I write this letter, I am struck by how fractious and complicated is the world in which we live. War and pestilence rage in several places, and natural disasters continue to beset this earth of ours. Domestic politics in Pakistan prevent a great deal of necessary work by the government, as in the… Read more >>

Holiday 2020 Newsletter
Dear Friends, The Hoshyar Foundation has been in operation for nearly fourteen years, since early 2007. In that time, we have worked on a shoestring budget to increase girls’ access to post-primary education in underserved communities in Pakistan. We have built, reconstructed, or expanded 14 schools and helped nearly 700 girls graduate from high school.… Read more >>

Dear Friends of Hoshyar, I’ve just returned from an intense but exhilarating three weeks in Pakistan. Hoshyar currently supports ten schools—one in Punjab, eight in Mansehra district, and one in the tribal area of Torghar—and I was able to visit seven of them. Bad weather, road conditions, and security concerns prevented traveling to the other… Read more >>

Dear Friends, 2018 was a great year for Hoshyar. Our signal accomplishment was to build a girls’ higher secondary facility in the village of Jabergali, complete with science lab and library. When I visited the construction site in March, I was inspired by all that was happening. Late winter weather notwithstanding, walls were going up,… Read more >>

Holiday 2017 Newsletter
Dear Friends of Hoshyar, In 2009, Hoshyar had fewer than 100 girls in middle school—and not a single one in high school. Since then, 379 girls have graduated from Hoshyar-sponsored high schools. Amazingly, 57 have also earned higher secondary degrees (F.A., F.Sc.). And there is more: 8 Commerce qualifications conferred 7 Primary teachers certified 9… Read more >>

Dear Friends, As we complete our tenth year, I am pleased to report on really great developments with our programs for girls’ education in Pakistan. Yes, political instability continues, as do security problems; so do fraught relations between the nominal allies, the U.S. and Pakistan. But all our schools are operating well. Dozens of students… Read more >>

Pictured above: Bhunja tenth-graders take their turn outdoors because the school is two classrooms short. Graffiti reads: “The house in which there is no book is worse than a house deserted.” Hoshyar is happy to announce a major grant from the HBL (Habib Bank Limited) Foundation in Karachi. The three-year award will be utilized to… Read more >>

Fall 2014 Update
Keeping Our Promises—the Malala Fund We have good news, and reason to be optimistic at Hoshyar, despite what an unhappy year 2014 has been for Pakistan. We have built two new village schools in honor of Malala Yousafzai, the young education activist. For this we can thank your generosity, the dedication and hard work of… Read more >>
